TOPSOE - POWERING PROGRESS

Topsoe is a leading Danish chemical company that specializes in the production of catalysts and technologies for the chemical industry. In 2020, the company made a strategic decision to increase its production capacity by developing a hydrogen processing catalyst plant in Pasadena, Texas, with a target completion date of 2023. The plant will produce products for traditional refining as well as renewable diesel and jet fuel using Topsoe’s HydroFlex™ technology. Topsoe needed a reliable partner to help execute this challenging project within the given timeline.

Challenges

When establishing cost-effective and profitable projects, a key factor is the time to market. Topsoe's challenge was to develop a large-scale plant in a short amount of time while maintaining the highest quality standards. The challenge was magnified by the global pandemic that hindered physical meetings and travel for several months. Topsoe needed a partner who could work remotely, with a deep understanding of what elements need to be in place to ensure flexible and agile cooperation, and who could act as their extended arm to complement their workflows.

Solution

Topsoe chose DIS/CREADIS as the two companies had a history of collaborating on various projects and had a foundation built on mutual trust. DIS/CREADIS took responsibility for all engineering and supervision activities of the project, from the concept phase to commissioning. They also incorporated workflows to complement Topsoe's and brought local knowledge about regulatory requirements, permissions, etc., from a US-based civil engineering consultancy company named Dewberry.

Executing a project like the catalyst plant has been demanding. Even though there has been challenges, good cooperation has ensured that we are on time and expect to be ready for operation in 2023,” said Sten Gøtzche Nielsen, Project Director, TOPSOE.

Why DIS/CREADIS

DIS/CREADIS was able to deliver a successful project execution in the middle of a global pandemic and allocated all necessary resources and competences to make the project successful. Good communication helped compensate for the lack of physical presence without compromising quality and milestones. DIS/CREADIS’s project leads encountered several communication and technical challenges but were able to make quick and effective decisions from the early kick-off phase to ensure that the project was proceeding as planned. DIS/CREADIS’s expertise in managing multi-disciplined projects and its belief in building great projects with clients with passion, knowledge, and trust made them an ideal partner for Topsoe.
