IR HIREL - DESIGNING RESILIENT POWER SUPPLY CABINETS FOR SPACE

IR HiRel, a division of INFINEON Technologies, specializes in providing power electronics to the space industry. As the space industry has grown over the years, IR HiRel has constantly worked to develop new and innovative power supplies for satellites. The company approached DIS/CREADIS for help in designing and analyzing the power supply cabinets for their latest project.

Challenges

When a satellite is launched, it is subjected to immense forces that can cause damage to the power supply cabinet. This means that the design of the power supply cabinet needed to be robust enough to withstand these forces and to deflect the heat generated by the power supply. Other factors such as weight and dimensions also needed to be considered. Additionally, some components are particularly sensitive to the radiation present in space, so calculations had to be made on material thickness vs. radiation protection.

Solution

DIS/CREADIS worked on the design and analysis of the power supply cabinets, using 3D modeling and other development tools. The team also carried out various tests and fatigue analyses, including calculations on the power supply fluctuations and investigations into the circuit board reactions to vibrations and shock loads. To ensure that the power supply cabinets met the necessary standards, DIS/CREADIS carried out EMC testing of the electronics. This involved writing test procedures based on the satellite manufacturer's specifications and making all the required measurements.

Benefits

By working with DIS/CREADIS, IR HiRel was able to focus on other critical tasks while DIS/CREADIS took care of the development and testing of the power supply cabinets. This released internal resources and allowed the company to concentrate on the core business of developing and adapting power supplies for the space industry.

Why DIS/CREADIS

IR HiRel found it difficult to quickly recruit people with the right competencies for their project. By partnering with DIS/CREADIS, the company was able to access a team of highly skilled engineers who had the necessary expertise in power electronics and the space industry. DIS/CREADIS was able to provide the required expertise and resources to complete the project efficiently, allowing IR HiRel to focus on other areas of their business.
“Our cooperation with DIS has released internal resources, and we have been able to focus on some of all the other tasks at hand,” said Steen Brandi, Engineering Manager at IR HiRel.

SKY-LIGHT – NEW FLEXIBLE ROBOTIC PACKAGING PRODUCTION MACHINE DELIVERES INCREASED SAFETY FOR NEW PLANT

SKY-LIGHT, a film and packaging manufacturer, has invested in a new production plant that required an efficient and safe packaging system. The previous manual processes were not optimal in terms of the working environment and safety, and the new plant had to be able to handle rolls weighing between 200 kg and 1800 kg (441 lb. to 3968 lb.). This meant that the packaging system needed to be very flexible and capable of adjusting to nine different packing methods. SKY-LIGHT did not have the internal resources to develop this system, and so they contacted DIS/CREADIS to take over the development, construction, design, setup, assembly, and commissioning of the plant.
