VELUX - SIMULATIONS REDUCE DEVELOPMENT TIME AND COSTS FOR SKYLIGHT WINDOW NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

VELUX is a leading company in the development, production, and sale of skylight windows. Their innovative solutions bring direct daylight and fresh air into homes and facilities around the world. VELUX wanted to further develop their product development process by using simulation to reduce development time, risks, and costs. The VELUX product development team needed to get an overview of available simulation methods that could be relevant to significantly improving their process.

Challenges

VELUX needed to reduce their development time and costs, while ensuring their final product met structural and functional requirements. They needed an engineering consulting partner that was an expert in simulation methods and able to help them achieve these goals.

Solution

VELUX chose DIS/CREADIS to investigate the possibility of further developing VELUX’s existing product development process by utilizing product simulations. DIS/CREADIS provided an overview of available simulation methods and advised VELUX on the competences needed to conduct these simulations.

Simulations can be performed using various software programs, such as Static Structural, Transient Structural/Explicit Dynamics, Steady-state Thermal, and Computational Fluid Dynamics. These simulations can estimate the structural and functional properties of a product based on design and material properties, which allows for a more optimal design and can shorten parts of the product development process.

DIS/CREADIS also advised VELUX on how to best utilize and further develop simulations in their product development process. They provided support for the development of skills and competences of VELUX employees to ensure they have the right skills to utilize selected simulation methods in their processes.

Why DIS/CREADIS

DIS/CREADIS has extensive expertise and experience with simulations, and they frequently use simulation to optimize, and assure the quality of products. They can assist with virtual product development, including Computer Aided Design, Computer Aided Industrial Design, Computer Aided Manufacturing, and Product Lifetime Management.
